That same year she was hired as an intern in An American Place restaurant for one year. Guarnaschelli started her cooking training by watching his mother edit cookbooks and test recipes. The first time she was exposed to cooking, she watched her mother test recipes in her kitchen while editing cookbooks. She ultimately became head chef at Butter. Guarnaschelli defeated Cat Cora on Food Network's Iron Chef America 2007 Farmers Market Battle. She also participated as the season's third runner to the winner of The Next Iron Chef, as well as an Iron Chef judge ever since. In addition, she competed on Food Network's Food Network Challenge Ultimate Thanksgiving Feast which she lost. After the conclusion of The Next Iron Chef's 4th season, she was named sous-chef under Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian. She was the host of Food Network's The Cooking Loft With Alex Guarnaschelli in 2008. There, she leads a small class of students in how to make classic recipes.
